SOLAR TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

National Energy Education Development Project

The National Energy Education Development Project is dedicated to promoting an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. The NEED Project's educator network includes over 65,000 classrooms nationwide who use NEED's annually up-dated curriculum materials. Educators are NEED members in order to receive updated curriculum materials, participate in workshops and inservices, and to connect to the NEED network. Membership is $35.00. In many states and localities, membership is sponsored for interested teachers by federal or state energy agencies and other NEED corporate sponsors.

The NEED Project Beginnings

  • Started in 1980, launched by a Congressional resolution spearheaded by Gerard Katz, a New York state physics teacher, the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit education association dedicated to promoting a realistic understanding of the scientific, economic, and environmental impacts of energy so that students and teachers can make educated decisions.

  • On March 20, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4738, entitled "National Energy Education Day: By the President of the United States, A Proclamation." The proclamation read, in part: "There are only two ways that we can reduce the imports of oil from foreign countries. One is to increase production of American energy of all kinds—and we have been blessed with tremendous reserves compared to other nations—and the other is to conserve the energy supplies that we have from all sources. We have made some progress. It has not yet been adequate, but it's been steady. We've more than reduced imports by a million barrels a day—and we expect to make even greater progress this year—since I've been in office, in 1977.

  • One of the major opportunities that has not yet been explored is to educate our young people—who can be just as effective, perhaps even more so, than many adults—in the facts about energy, what the opportunities are for conservation, and how they themselves can help. In homes, on the job, in transportation—there is a tremendous opportunity not only for young people to learn but also to educate their parents about the facts concerning how we can solve our energy problem through conservation.

  • A recent analysis has shown that there is an abysmal lack of information within the public school system among the students about basic facts concerning energy. And this designation of a national day for energy education is a very worthwhile commitment because of the facts that I've just described..." To Read More Click Here

What do former USF interns have to say about their Internship at Bright Solar Systems?

Internship with Bright Solar Systems

My experience with Bright Solar Systems was one of the most important contributors to my young career. Alicia Valdes offered me an internship that demanded creativity and leadership from me. Bright Solar Systems is a small business that is finding it’s footing to be something very big, and Ms. Valdes offers her interns the chance to be a part of it. Interning here gave me an opportunity to take a big role in something so much larger than I could imagine.

My internship gave me the chance to show the colors I never knew I had and to understand what it takes to be a big shot in the corporate world; rather than just a little guy making coffee runs. If you want an internship experience that has you working copy machines, organizing folders and other junk than don’t look here. Whereas if you want to be a part of organizing multi-million dollar events, brainstorming and strategizing marketing techniques and designing what may very well be the future, apply!

Sincerely,

What is USF Engineering Expo?

This 40+ year-old event showcases the creativity and importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), and promotes kids to get involved for a bright future in these growing fields.

Student Group joins International Solar Movement

In recent years there have been a number of calls to action over climate change by everyone from Brad Pitt to Barack Obama.

While many like to talk about the issue, one award-winning USF organization is playing a more tangible role to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Rachana Vidhi, who graduated this summer, founded USF’s chapter of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES-USF) last spring.

“Over the past six months, we have given over 100 students … the experiences necessary for them to contribute to solar energy,” she said. “(ISES) wants to inspire an era of solar energy innovation … and to advance education, research and policy.”

The group’s students were selected for programs in Chicago and Colorado where they have been able to work on and learn about cutting-edge research in the field of solar energy. They have also completed internships at organizations such as Young ISES, ISES-USF’s parent organization.

When it was only two months old, the group won the Center for Student Involvement’s award for Best New Student Organization for its “extraordinary growth” and “exceptional collaboration” with other organizations such as Young ISES and the numerous companies it brought to do tours and lectures.

After one lecture, Bright Solar Systems hired nine ISES-USF students to set up a solar energy conference.

Past speakers have included engineering and business professors and CEOs discussing everything about solar power, from its aesthetics to finances and engineering.

Vidhi said many were interested in solar energy back in January when she first got the idea to start an ISES chapter, but students didn’t seem to have a platform to take action.

“We founded this organization to give students opportunities and roles where they can help solar energy grow,” Vidhi said. To learn more Click Here

ISES: POWER (International Solar Energy Society: People Organizing World Energy Reform) is the world's first student chapter of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and the winner of the outstanding new student organization award. This is an interdisciplinary student initiative.

The organization is dedicated to working on advancing education, research and policy related to renewable energy. Find more information on the Facebook page (ISES POWER at USF) and on the website at (http://isespowerusf.weebly.com/) or contact directly by email at ises.power@gmail.com.

What do former USF interns have to say about their Internship at Bright Solar Systems?

"I held the Position of Global Solar Integrator Specialist at Bright Solar Systems and my job was to work and build relationship with the Selective Solar Technology Provider and Supplier Companies in order to review their projects for selecting them to be part of Company's Network. The task was very exciting as I got a chance to study market share of various solar (thermal, PV) companies in their respective areas, communicate with each and every single one of them and make a decision of their involvement into the network.

As an Intern, I could attend weekly meetings in order to decide the strategy with my supervisors and fellow interns. Meetings used to be very comprehensive yet specific targeting the goals to achieve, in a particular time frame. This experience gave me an insight of professional etiquette and made me confident to conduct meetings on my own.

Meetings followed by email conversations with company representatives allowed me to improve my interpersonal skills and made me an expert in building professional relationships. Tours to the field sites helped me review the business and engineering aspects of of the consulting that organization does.

I am very thankful to my supervisor Ms. Alicia Valdes as she guided me throughout the internship. Her suggestions always helped me solve the problems and encouraged me to do my job effectively and efficiently. So, in order to conclude I would say Bright Solar System was one of the best companies I could have ever worked for."

Thank You!

Sincerely,

To whom it may concern:

I am a 4th year PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at University of South Florida, and I am writing to express my full recommendation of Bright Solar Systems as a place of employment and organization to partner with. In Spring of 2014, I attended a student organization meeting (International Solar Energy Society at University of South Florida). At this meeting, the CEO of Bright Solar Systems, Ms. Alicia Valdes was the invited speaker. She discussed the environmental impacts of traditional energy sources and the need for solar implementation both nationwide and internationally. Along with this, she discussed her company’s business platform and its unique model. Immediately, her passionate for solar energy and educating the general public resonated with me. Considering, one of my life goals has always been to ‘popularize solar electricity’.

The mission statement and vision of Bright Solar Systems, along with the attributes of Ms. Valdes, make the company an excellent one to work with. As an intern, I was able to experience many things like- project management, client relations and networking. The projects and team members were diverse, helping to strengthen my communication and general engineering skills. Some of the projects included solar sculptures, fashion and boating. In each of these projects, I was able to be apart of the full conception process- from working with designers, to determining engineering specifications, to working with contracts and clients.

I was able to fully contribute and have some of my ideas incorporated into the final designs. These sort of responsibilities were important at my level in education, because they challenged me, creating for a more meaningful internship experience. Alicia was an excellent boss. She led by example, always demonstrating good business practices and going the extra mile to make sure her team of employees were successful and rewarded. In my time working closely with Alicia, I have helped her with incorporating solar energy in to children’s education in the state of Florida. She considers mentoring very important and participates in community outreach.

Uniquely, Alicia is supportive in helping her team members reach their personal goals both within the company and life. My time as Aesthetic Solar Cell Specialist with Bright Solar Systems was well spent. I was able to use my background in thin-film photovoltaics and renewable energy systems, and apply it to the business aspect. The solar energy industry is new and emerging; it was an invaluable experience having been able to be a part of the beginning of something so great. I strongly recommend working with Ms. Valdes and this organization, as their business ethics are sound and such passion for solar energy is rare, but needed.

Sincerely,

To whom it may concern,

I am delighted to write this reference on behalf of Alicia Valdes in support of her future success and professional pursuits. I met Alicia at an internship fair where we immediately hit it off, she is so passionate about her work it is truly inspiring. Along with many great qualities Alicia is a very strong and trusting as well as personable and understanding, making her the perfect mentor, leader and boss.

Alicia offered me an internship with the title “Executive Assistant”. Along with the title came various responsibilities and tasks that gave me a business experience you cannot buy. With the 4 short months I was available for the internship, I truly believe I learned more during that time than my previous years of education. You get hands on experience communicating with business executives and even traveling to different events or meetings really giving you a sense of the real business world.

The opportunities offered by Alicia Valdes are truly one of a kind. My knowledge of the business world and endless connections are so valuable to me. Having Alicia has a leader and mentor to look up to is truly a rewarding experience and I would recommend anyone to consider Alicia as your leader in the business world.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Thank you!
