“The unprecedented scope of this project furthers our already strong commitment to sustainability in our operations,” said Jerry Storch, chairman and CEO of Wayne, N.J. based Toy R Us, which operates 886 stores in the U.S. “New Jersey’s leadership in providing renewable, clean energy opportunities for companies has helped pave the way for an installation of this size and underscores the state as a champion for solar energy growth across North America.”

Ikea plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its store in East Palo Alto, Calif., which features 38,000-square-foot array and 1,344 solar panels.

The 302-kW system, will produce approximately 427,900 kWh of clean electricity annually – the equivalent of reducing 326 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2 (calculating clean energy equivalents using the EPA calculator)


Store manager Stan Miller stands on top of Walmart 3784 in Franklin, Ohio.

The solar installations are expected to supply approximately 5 percent to 20 percent of each store’s overall electricity use. “Solar power makes sense for Walmart, and it makes sense for Ohio,” said David Ozment, Walmart’s senior director of energy. “We are committed to increasing the use of renewable energy resources, including solar panels, at our stores in Ohio and throughout the country.”

Walmart Is Killing the Rest of Corporate America in Solar Power Adoption

Walmart’s efforts are also only just beginning—it has pledged to double its solar installations by 2020 and says that, long term, it wants to get all of its electricity from renewables, up from about a quarter of its worldwide consumption today. So while smaller companies like Kohl's and Whole Foods, which according to the Environmental Proection Agency get all of their power from green sources, have made faster progress shifting their own power consumption to renewables, Walmart has the ability to keep growing the solar market. I shop at my local Walmart and Walmart grocery at least once a week.

 

I want to congratulate Walmart on being the leader in installing roof top solar on its headquarters in Bentonville and to encourage them to install it on individual stores. I would be even happier shopping at Walmart if I knew there were solar panels on the roof.

 

Walmart should also support roof top solar for our homes. Too much electric power is lost in transport, it is good to produce it where it is used. Click here to read more.

  • A successful business is one that knows how to control costs -- a maxim that is true in good times, and even more so in bad. Over the past five years, retail electricity rates have risen by an average of 4.7% per year, outpacing inflation by approximately 1.2%, according to the Energy Information Agency. Going solar offers businesses the opportunity to fix their energy costs as a hedge against long-term utility rate increases. 

 

  • Businesses today are going green for a variety of reasons.  Some want to gain a competitive edge, others want to please their customers, employees and/or stockholders, some want to save operational costs and others feel a need to help the environment.  Any reason is a good reason because it ultimately benefit's the environment.

 

  • Federal or a particular state often offer corporations tax credits and deductions ranging from 10-35% of the cost of purchasing and installing solar energy systems. Some states offer cost savings through net metering. 

 

  • If the business is producing energy in excess of what it is using, the energy is sent into the utility grid and the building power meter actually runs backwards. Since many businesses are closed two days a week, this effectively means the utility is buying the power on said days. Net metering is an incredibly effective means of slashing utility costs. 

 

  • Businesses can gain further benefits through going solar by taking advantage of government solar financing programs. Typically created as state programs, "solar loans" offer financing for the purchase and installation of the equipment for new constructions and renovations as well.

 

  • Photovoltaic or PV systems are reliable and pollution-free electric systems that use the sun as renewable source of energy. Some states have the net metering programs which work when the sun power generated is more than needed then the power goes to the utility grid and the meter runs backwards providing you the retail value for the power the system generates.
